Inserts, Doublers, Liners

Diaper inserts and doublers make cloth diapers absorbent! There are several different types and each has its advantage and uses.

  • Cotton: Very absorbent, organic cotton available, often blended with other fibers
  • Hemp: More absorbent than cotton, very durable, has natural anti-bacterial/anti-microbial properties, trim fitting
  • Microfiber: A polyester blend fabric, absorbs very quickly, inexpensive, dries quickly, durable, soft, wicks moisture from skin leaving baby feeling dry
  • Stay Dry: Very thirsty, absorbs quickly, inserts are topped with microfiber to place against baby's skin, do not place stay dry fabric directly against baby's skin (it will dry out baby's skin)
  • Bamboo: More absorbent than cotton, very durable, has natural anti-bacterial/anti-microbial properties, super soft, a renewable resource and naturally biodegradable

Liners line the diaper and are very thin. Some are disposable and one-time use. Liners have many purposes, but often people will use liners when they need to use a diaper rash cream or medication that is not meant to be used with cloth diapers. This protects the diaper from actually touching the cream. When non-diaper-friendly-safe creams are used on diapers, it will ruin the diaper with its water repelling properties. People also use liners when they don’t want to deal with messes. In this case, the liner is removed and dumped into the toilet with the waste, and the diaper stays fairly clean. Not much mess!
